See you don't really need a Hotel Management degree to be in a cruise ship, there are plenty of vacancies available to be in there. You can be a nurse, comedian, security staff, dancer, entertainer and so on. I am gonna start now with the advantages and disadvantages:
ADVANTAGES OF WORKING IN A CRUISE SHIP:
- You travel the world for free. This is the best benefit of working in a cruise ship, you travel the world for free, cruise ships travel to multiple ports within a contract and you get to see the things there for free.
- You don't pay for food and housing. You really don't have to pay for food by being in a cruise ship, it is done by the cruise company itself which hires you and you also get a room to stay in which is obviously shared with 1 or more crew members.
- A lot of exposure from different cultures and people from all over the world. A Cruise Ship usually hours people internationally who are from different countries with different culture. You get exposed to all of them and you get a great environment. You learn alot and you do alot, they become like your family there!
- You can eat even on guest restaurants and for reduced prices.
- You get access to ship's entertainment places and there are specific crew parties organized monthly where crew members have alot of fun.
- It is definitely a different experience than having a 9-5 job sitting on your chair.
- You have almost no living expenses and you SAVE ALOT OF YOUR MONEY. I mean you can see, you travel for free, get free food, accommodation, there are more stuff which is provided by the cruise ship itself and as you stay on sea for months you don't really get to spend money on other things, I mean yes there are things where you can spend money on but you save alot being on a cruise ship. When your contract ends you get about 3-4 months or maybe more free time, you can use that time to travel to some other place using your saved money.
- If you have a bad boss and you hate working under him or her, well you should be happy because they are there only for some months only, when contract is expired they are usually changed.
- You stay away from your family, friends or your relationship partner for a long period of time. Cruise Ship contracts are usually for 6 months to 9 months. For that period of time you are away from your place so you are definitely gonna miss your loved ones.
- You don't get paid much for the amount of time and work you put in, working on a cruise ship can be really challenging.
- Work times are generally like 10-14 hours per day and you have to work 7 days a week. You don't get any off being in a cruise ship. But yes you get breaks in between the work time for eating and other stuff.
- You also miss your home place, the crew cabin you get to sleep on is shared by other crew members which is actually pretty small. You won't get the comfort you get at your home.
- You lack privacy being in a cruise ship, everything you will do on a cruise ship or talk about, there is a high chance someone will eventually know about it and they get viral very quickly to other crew members.
Working in a Cruise Ship is a different experience and everyone who is doing work in the hospitality industry or is planning to should have this once in a lifetime, maybe you will love it so much that you will make it your entire life career.
